Have you ever been at a party and after telling someone your job title they say something like, “Cybersecurity, cool. But what exactly do you mean by that?”
If so, you are not alone. And the University of Phoenix recently showed us why.
The school announced results from a cybersecurity job survey of 2,000 adults in the United States. It turns out that most Americans know very few specifics about cybersecurity jobs. Check this out for yourself:
With so little knowledge about cybersecurity job roles and opportunities, it makes it harder to close the employment gap, doesn’t it? This is a topic often discussed at SecureWorld regional cybersecurity conferences.
But there is a bright spot detected in the survey, and it has to do with the knowledge many workers already have.
“U.S. adults who are interested in a cybersecurity career could tap into some of the skills they already possess,” says Dennis Bonilla, executive dean for the College of Information Systems and Technology, School of Business, and College of Criminal Justice at University of Phoenix.
“More than a quarter of survey respondents said that they, in fact, possess some of the IT skills taught in the university’s cybersecurity-focused programs, such as programming (33 percent), data analytics (26 percent), and coding and web development (both 31 percent),” Bonilla says.
We have come across one thing that may increase interest in a cybersecurity career. It is a cybersecurity dream job working aboard luxury yachts!
